DingTalk vs. DingDing: Which Version Should Your Team Use?

DingDing serves users in China; DingTalk serves users outside China. Compare accounts, sign-in, cross-border collaboration, and what Dedicated Edition customers should review.

DingTalk vs. DingDing: Which Version Should Your Team Use?

DingDing (钉钉) is designed for users in China. DingTalk, available through dingtalk.io, is designed for users outside China. If you're setting up a new international office, start with DingTalk. If your company already uses DingDing in China, you'll also need to arrange collaboration between the teams.

The naming is confusing because DingTalk is commonly used as the English name for 钉钉 too. This guide uses DingDing for the China product and DingTalk for the international product.

Which Product Is Right for Your Employees?

Choose based on who will use it, rather than where headquarters is located. A Chinese company's new Singapore office, for example, can consider DingTalk for its local team while colleagues in China continue using their existing organization.

Situation Recommended starting point
New office outside China Explore DingTalk's business plans
Existing DingDing users in China Follow the company's current account arrangements
International team working with China-based colleagues Evaluate DingTalk and cross-border collaboration
Temporary business travel Check with the existing account administrator
Existing Dedicated Edition customer Review the current agreement and the new team's needs

DingTalk is not simply DingDing with the interface set to English. The official product and sign-in guidance explains which users and sign-in methods each supports.

How Do You Set Up Accounts?

The Terms of Service distinguish users who register with email or a non-+86 mobile number from DingDing users who register with a +86 number. Companies can also issue enterprise accounts managed by an administrator.

Employees registering their own accounts should join through the company invitation. For company-issued accounts, the administrator should set up departments, add employees, and provide login instructions. The Help Center covers enterprise setup and sign-in with an organization code.

Arrange this before onboarding a new team so employees know which account and organization to use.

Can DingTalk and DingDing Users Work Together?

Yes. The China product's Privacy Policy describes cross-border communication with DingTalk users and the information shared in those interactions.

For ongoing collaboration, DingTalk offers Partner Organizations. Both organizations need access to the feature, and administrators must set up the connection. Selected employees can then find contacts, communicate, and work on documents together. See the Partner Organizations guide.

A sales office could connect the people who work with product and delivery teams in China, without sharing the entire employee directory. Connecting organizations does not automatically move their existing files or applications.

What About Data Hosting and Privacy?

Review the policies for the product you're buying. DingDing and international DingTalk documentation should not be used interchangeably.

If your company has data-location requirements, ask about the relevant files, employee information, backups, and third-party applications. Describing what the team will use makes it easier to establish whether the proposed service meets those requirements.

What If You Already Use Dedicated Edition?

Review the existing contract, custom applications, and data that needs to remain available. Subscriptions, accounts, and historical content do not transfer automatically when you adopt DingTalk.

Start with one shared project—for example, an international sales team preparing a quote with colleagues in China. Check that participants can find one another, discuss the work, and access the right documents. Use the results to plan a wider rollout.

Contact DingTalk with your team locations, headcount, and current setup to discuss accounts, collaboration, and any migration requirements. New customers can also explore trial options on the DingTalk website.
